Cookie Policy

This page lists the cookies and browser storage entries this site uses, what each one does, and how long it lasts. It should be read alongside our privacy policy, which explains how we handle personal information more generally.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. It is sent back to the site on later requests so the site can remember something — for example, that you already submitted a comment. “Browser storage” (local storage and session storage) is a similar mechanism that keeps data in the browser without sending it with every request.

Strictly necessary

These are needed for the site to work. They cannot be switched off through the site, though you can block them in your browser — doing so will break the features they support.

  • WordPress session cookie (wordpress_sec_…, wordpress_logged_in_…) — only set if you log in to the site. It keeps you logged in. Session lifetime.
  • Comment cookie (comment_author_…, comment_author_email_…, comment_author_url_…) — set when you post a comment so the form is pre-filled next time. Lasts about one year; cleared by logging out or clearing browser data.
  • Consent preference (rs-cookie-choice) — remembers whether you accepted optional cookies, so the banner does not reappear. Lasts about one year.

Security and bot protection

  • Cloudflare (__cf_bm, cf_clearance, _cfuvid) — set by our content delivery network to distinguish real visitors from automated traffic and to protect the site during attacks. Typically 30 minutes, or longer when a challenge has been passed.
  • Cloudflare Turnstile — used on comment and contact forms. It may set storage entries while it decides whether a submission looks human. These are used for spam prevention, not advertising.

Preferences

  • Result finder memory — the result finder stores the board and class you last selected in your browser’s local storage (keys rs-last-board and rs-last-class) so they are pre-selected when you return. This stays on your device, is not sent to us, and remains until you clear your browser data.
  • Display preference — if you change a display setting such as the theme, the choice is kept in local storage (key rs-theme) so it persists between visits.

Analytics

Where analytics are enabled, they are configured to measure page views and aggregate behaviour — which pages are visited, roughly where visitors come from, and which device type is used. They are not used to build an advertising profile of you across other websites, and they are only loaded if you accept optional cookies.

Advertising

This site is supported by advertising served through Google AdSense. Advertising cookies are optional: they are treated as non-essential and are not used for personalised advertising unless you accept optional cookies.

  • Google advertising cookies (__gads, __gpi, IDE, NID, test_cookie) — set by Google to measure ad performance and, where consent is given, to personalise advertising. Lifetimes range from a session to about 13 months.
  • Google Analytics (_ga, _ga_*) — only loaded if analytics are enabled, and only after optional cookies are accepted. About two years.

You can turn off personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, and opt out of third-party advertising cookies at aboutads.info/choices. Opting out does not stop ads from appearing; it stops them being tailored to your browsing.

Our own advertising rules are simple: no ad inside a form or over a button, no ad styled to look like navigation, and no request to click an ad. If advertising on this site ever gets in the way of the content you came for, tell us and we will move it.

Managing cookies

You can control cookies through your browser settings, where you can see what is stored, delete it, and block future storage — usually under “Privacy” or “Site data” in the settings menu. Blocking cookies may stop comments, login and the result finder’s memory from working, but reading pages will still work.

You can also clear the result finder’s memory at any time by clearing site data for resultspot.com in your browser.

Changes

If we add or remove a cookie we will update this page and its review date. The list above is checked whenever the site’s features change.
